Hi all!

I love going to the cinema and have great fun discussing the new releases (and the oldies!) with anyone that wants to join in! So, I thought I would start a topic dedicated to movies! Smile

The first film I'm going to talk about is Cirque de Freak: Vampire's Assistant

I thought this film was better than the trailers made out. I was a little sceptical at the beginning, but once you get past the first 20-30 minutes it gets really interesting. They left it at the end so that a second film could be made. I really hope they make one! I noticed in the titles that the film is based on a book so I will have to check it out to see if the storyline continues!

Plot: Basically, it is about two best friends who go to a freak show involving some definite freaky characters! The headlining act is a vampire. one thing leads to another and one of the boys gets turned into a half-vampire and becomes his assistant. He can't tell his best friend though and has to make everyone think he's dead. The boy then gets caught up in all th politics and mysterious doings of the vampire world!

As I say, you have to get past the first part of the film before it grips you, but once you're sucked it, there's no letting go! Has anyone else seen the film? If so, please let me know what you thought about it Smile

Great idea for a topic, there's always room in my day to discuss movies. I just had a look at the trailer for that film and it certainly does look freaky! Like the way they haven't gone overboard in the special powers department for the vampires and you can still identify with the main characters on some level and they are not evil creatures who kill their victims when they feed.

By the way, the books the film is based on are a saga of 12 books split into 4 trilogies and the film depicts the events in the first 3 books, so there may well be a sequel in the pipeline ;)

All in all an interestsing twist on the vampire legend that seems well worth a watch.

It has been a while since I went to the cinema to see a film for me, that is becasue the children always want to watch the latest Disney or other animated movie.

I am looking forward to when my children get a bit older and they want to watch the kind of films I am interested in Laugh

I must say though that reading this forum has made me think about getting a sitter in and having a night without kids.. off to see what is on over the weekend

Me again! Smile

Well, if you're looking for a film for the weekend without the kids, 'Law Abiding Citizen' is a must see! I was really looking forward to it, and it was well worth the wait!

It's an 18 for good reason. It is very clever and keeps you thinking, wondering what's going to happen next. The whole cinema was groaning with disgust near the beginning, and then jumped out of their skins half way through! If you're like me, you will see the jumpy bit coming, but even I still jumped!

Plot: A man's wife and daughter are murdered but the murderer gets off with just serving 5-10 years by making a deal with a lawyer! The man is outraged and spends the next 10 years planning revenge on not only the murderer but the whole justice system! He is arrested straight away, but somehow keeps killing people from within prison! Will they ever be able to stop him? Surprised

Gerald Butler is brilliant in this film. He is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors. If you can cope with a relatively small amount of gore (seriously not that much at all; nowhere near as much as the zombie movies that come out these days) then you will love this film! Great action and suspense!

Yep, it's me! Laugh

I was going to go to the cinema last night a watch Paranormal Activity on my own, but then I got too scared and stayed in to watch Valkyrie! So I'll talk about that instead Smile

Plot: Set in World War II, this film tells the story of a group of germans, both soldiers and politicians, that stand against Hitler's regime and plan to overthrow him.

It has been made very well. Tom Cruise is very good as the mastermind of the latest attempt to gain control over Germany; Operation Valkyrie. It shows us that not every German was behind Hitler and there were in fact 15 attempts to assasignate him by the Germans alone! I don't want to say anymore as I will give too much away, but all in all it is a good film to see if you like war films.

Going back to things on at the cinema, I'm also going to talk about The Men Who Stare at Goats! I can't really describe the plot as it is so strange even I get confused! Basically a small-town reporter goes to the middle east to make it big and ends up learning about a secret section of the US military that tried to create psychic spies! He ends up on a wild adventure with one of their 'Jedi Warriors' as he tries to get to the bottom of this extraordinary story! Everyone told me not to go and see the film because they thought it sounded strange, but once I heard it was based on actual events, I thought, why not! It turned out to be quite amusing and, even though it is completely 'out there', I wanted to know what happened next! In my opinion, if you have an open mind and don't mind the bizarre, then you should go and see it Smile

Wow, I just keep getting here before anyone else replies Smile

I thought I would proudly let you all know I was very brave last night and went to see Paranormal Activity!

Plot: A young couple start filiming themselves as they sleep to see if anything strange happens and the young woman believes she is being haunted.

I'm sure most of you have seen the trailers on the TV for this film, claiming it is the scariest film this decade. Well, the audience was screaming anf jumping and screaming some more!…..but I wasn't. If watching Most Haunted gets your spine tingling, then this film might make you jump a lot! There are bangs and crashes and whispers and shadows that I can see might make some people a little edgy. I however, did not find it scary. I was laughing though at the reaction of the rest of the audience. They truely seemed terrified! At the very end there is a part that might be thought of a scary but just because that really makes you jump and is rather creepy. All in all though, I felt it was like the Blair Witch Project; your usual strange noises to try and scare you throughout the whole film but not actually scary until the very last moment. So, if you were scared by the Blair Witch Project, you will probably be terrified by this film. If not, then like me you will just find the rest of the audience's reaction quite amusing.

I think paranormal activity will go down as one of the most overrated movies of the year, if not the decade! At least with the bwp the concept was original but the whole low budget, isolated, 'reality' motion sickness inducing genre has lost its way in my opinion.

After watching the film I was left with theimpression that they could have done so much more with it, increasing the intensity with more things that happen off camera or just with more things that happen. I found the characters  to be quite annoying, none more so than micah who behaved in a childlike and smug manner, with  a level of contempt for his girlsfriends condition which bordered on abusive. They seemed stangely disconnected as a couple and perhaps the whole story was reality a metaphor for the unravelling of their relationship, the creepy bedroom scene indicative of the uncomfortablness between them.  So many dull and lifeless moments to this film punctuated by annoying irritations from a pantamine demon. Perhaps he and micah should have got a room. The ending was kind of cool though, depending on which one they are showing.

All in all I would say this is viral marketing at best, another lesson learned from the promoters of the bwp, although sadly this film too fails to live up to its hype.

lol! Cool video!

I'll do a review on the Dark Knight then Smile

I loved Batman Begins and was really looking forward to the Dark Knight's release. It turned out to be just as thrilling, action-packed, and exciting, if not more so! It grips you the whole way through, though my one critisism is that is felt a little too long. The storyline felt as though it had three parts, the first part being the longest.

Plot: Batman once again my protect Gotham City from the criminals that lruk in the darkness. Now, there is a new mastermind criminal in town; The Joker! He is gathering the criminals and banding them together to get rid of their nemesis, Batman. Can Batman defend the city, protect his identity, and stops those he is closest to getting hurt?

The acting in this film is brilliant, as are all the special effects. I would recommend it to anyone who loves action movies!

Until next time Wink

Hi All!

Ready for my next review? Smile

I recently went to see The Stepfather. I hadn't seen a single trailer for it, no advertising, nothing. So I thought, this is going to be interesting! I went into the screen to find only 2 other people sat in there. By the time the trailers had finished, there were a total of 11 people in the screen, including me! Now, this film only came out on Friday, do a lack of viewers did not look promising.

However! It turned out to be pretty good!

Plot: A boy comes back from military school to find his newly divorced mum engaged to a new man she barely knows. He soon begins to believe this man, his soon-to-be stepfather, is a notorious murderer on America's Most Wanted list. Can he convince anyone else in time? Or is he just being paranoid?

Now, I'm not giving anything away when I tell you the stepfather is a killer. They make that very very apparent in the first scene. I thought they might at least leave us guessing. The film is basically just like Disturbia, which I think is a brilliant suspenseful thriller, but it felt like its little sister. Seeing as you know he's a murderer from the start, it loses as bit of its suspense, but it is still pretty good. If anyone else out there liked Disturbia, then you should like this film, so long as you don't expect it to be as good as it! I also think they could have done more with it, but it still keeps you hooked for the duration of the film.

Until next time Wink

Hi All!

Today's film of choice is Me and Orson Wells! Now, this trailer looked pretty good to me so I was very eager to go see it.

Plot: A schoolboy wants to be an actor and one day happens to meet Orson Wells outside of a theatre with all the actors for his upcoming play. He manages to impress Orson Wells enough to earn himself a part in the play and from then on is sucked into the perculiar, exciting, fast-paced world of Orson Wells. Will he be one of the fortunate to survive this new way of life? Or will he end up back where he started?

To be honest, the film was not as good as it looked. It was ok, but not dazzling. I am glad I watched it, but I'm not sure if I'll get the DVD. There just didn't feel as though much happened by the end of it. It was like a short story that had been dragged out into a feature length film. Still, it is a nice relaxed film to go see on a Sunday afternoon Smile

Until next time…

Hi All!

Today's film of choice is New Moon, simply because I am going to see it for a third time tonight!

Plot: In the sequal to Twilight, Bella and Edward's relationship is going strong until an accident at the Cullen's house, invloving one drop of rather dangerous blood, causes Edward to rethink the whole situation. Desperate to protect Bella, Edward chooses to leave with his family and Bella is left completely alone. After months of depression, she finally finds solice in the company of old friend Jacob Black. But will this new relationship end up giving her the same pain as when Edward left? And what big secret is hanging over the Reservation? Without Edward's protection, is Bella really safe?

I think this film was a very good sequal. Unfortunately, the first time I saw it I had my annoying boyfriend talking to me the whole way through, so the film did not grip me as much as the first. Twilight had my breath caught in my chest it was so good! So that first viewing disapointed me somewhat. However, I went a second time, for which I am very glad for. Though the storyline spins off in a completely new direction, it adds more excitement to the already fantastic plot! It is seriously a must see! (though make sure you have watched Twilight first, preferably on as big a screen as you can manage!)

Until next time…

Hi All!

What a beautiful snowy day it is!!!! Now it feels like Christams Smile

Today's film of choice is Glorious 39.

Plot: Set just before the start of World War II, the eldest daughter in an influential family accidentally discovers some dark secrets the government is hiding. Can she get to the bottom of it without getting caught? Do her friends and family know about it all, or can they help her stop what is going on?

This film kept me thinking the whole way through. It was a little confusing in places, and at times I felt the storyline was getting lost. However, I still felt it was well worth the watch. The desire to know what was going to happen next and the need to discover, along with the main character, what was actually going on was gripping. It throws into question the true strength of family bonds and how far people will go to keep their secrets safe.

Until next time…

Hi All!

Last night I finally went to see the highly acclaimed Avatar!

Plot: Set in the future, a private company hiring ex-military have set up a base on the planet Pandora with the intension of mining for a rare, expensive mineral. The Nabi, native to the planet, have their home on the richest source of this mineral and the scientists with the company are trying to negotiate with the natives the terms of their removal from the location. Can they do this before the military step in and move them by force? To gain the Nabi's trust, the scientists have developed Avatars, creatures grown that look like the Nabi and can have a human's consciousness uploaded into it in order to control it. Will the Avatars be able to gain the Nabi's trust?

This film was actually, surprisingly good! I really enjoyed it. It has the right balance of action, love, and comedy. I would recommend the film to anyone to watch. I think the 3D aspect of it also worked well. It is a long film, but I didn't even notice, which is very good! Definitely a must see!

Until next time…

Happy New Year everyone!

Now, if any of you were mad like me and tried to go see Sherlock Holmes on boxing day, you will understand when I say 'What a Queue!!!!' I haven't seen a film quite so popular in a long time! The film was absolutely amazing though, so I know why everyone braved the cold, endured the queues, and put up with squeezing into any seat left available just to watch it!

Plot: Sherlock Holmes and his great doctor companion Watson must try to solve the mysterious case of Lord Blackwood rising from the grave and his so-called clack magic practices! Death and destruction line their journey as the devious evil-doer sets traps for them along the way. To make things more complicated, there is another secret adversary of Holmes' who is also trying to trip him up at every turn.

This action-packed film is incredible to watch! I was hooked the whole way through. You couldn't predict what was coming next and it was amazing to get a glimpse of the inner workings of the brilliant mind of Sherlock Holmes. You can see why his name and adventures are so well known! The film ended with the hint of a sequal, which I thoroughly hope they make soon! I would recommend it to anyone. Whether you like, action, adventure, mystery, or just a bit of subtle humour, you will love this film!

Until next time…

Hi All!

Today's film is It's Complicated.

Plot: This comedy is about a divorced couple that, ten years after their split, have an affair. The ex-wife is suddenly the other woman as her ex-hisband cheats with her on his current, young, gorgeous wife! Can their affair last? Or is a new man who appears on the scene enough competition to push the ex-husband to one side?

The trailers for this looked really good. I know it has been nominated for lots of awards so was really looking forward to watching it. To be honest, it wasn't as funny as it looked like it would be, but it was still good. If you like a more serious comedy, such as P.S. I love you, then you will enjoy this film. The acting is brilliant and the funny parts are very funny. I still think it's worth a watch.

Untill next time…

I went and saw It's Complicated on the weekend. I agree, it's not as funny as I thought it would be, but still a good laugh. Middle-aged, divorcee women will completed relate to the film! Definitely a chick-flick. I almost took my husband with me but am glad I decided to go with a bunch of my girl friends instead!
