Hi All!

Today's film is The Road.

Plot: A man and his son struggle to stay alive in post-apocolyptic America.

I must say this is a brilliant film. The acting was fantastic. Viggo Mortensen plays the role of a struggling father desperate to keep his son alive very, very well. Kodi Smit-McPhee is absolutely incredible. A stunning performance! I have not seen such good young acting for a very long time, and with such a difficult role! He captures the raw emotions of a child in a desperate, dangerous world and the fear of losing his only family, his father, spectacularly! It is a very moving film. The style, or pace, of the film is much like 'I Am Legend' in that not too much happens, yet it feels like something is going on all the time as the struggle and fight to survive is never-ending. It is not as 'jumpy' as 'I Am Legend', but very suspenseful. A very emotional film on every level! It shows how, even with the lengths Mortensen has to go to to keep his son safe while still trying to keep him morally good, his son's pure spirit shines through, untainted and always forgiving. A beautiful story. The film has made me want to go out and buy the book straight away!

Until next time…

Thanks harriet for the review! You seem to watch all the films as soon as they're released! I wasn't sure about seeing The Road, but you've made it sound like it's well worth a watch! I really enjoyed I Am Legend, so hopefully I will enjoy The Road just as much. Thanks!

I like this forum. It lets me get an idea about a film before I go see it. You should do requests harriet, so people can ask you about films before they buy them on DVD! You obviously watch a lot of them! Have you seen daybreakers at the cinema yet? Is it any good?

Hi All!

Sorry Johneye for not replying sooner. I saw Daybreakers on Thursday last week.

Plot: Immortal vampires and their human prey are locked in a struggle for supremacy – and survival – in a world that's rapidly running out of blood.

This wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be in one way, but still really good in others. I think I just misunderstood what the film was going to be like. It is definitely gory from the very beginning, so be careful! I was just starting to munch on some popcorn when something I really would have prefered not to have seen happened! The story line is quite good, though I don't think it reached its full potential. The film was good at working you up, letting you relax again, and then suddenly making you jump! I would recommend this film to anyone that likes a good sci-fi thriller, but who don't mind a bit of gore. It's nowhere near as bad as films like Saw, but it's still a bit shocking in places. The end is disappointing; it's rather sudden. That's probably influencing me the most when I say it wasn't as good as I thought, but before it ended I remember it being good!

Until next time…

Yeah, ended up seeing Daybreakers yesterday. I completely agree about the gore and the ending! Luckily I saw a different trailer just before going that hinted at a bit of gore, so I was slightly prepared (I chose not to get a hotdog!). The ending does sort of taint my impression of the rest of the film (it's cheesy!) but I still liked the concept. It's a little unbelievable that socially adept vampires would allow it to get that far with the blood situation without doing something about it sooner, but I guess I just have to be open minded!

Hi All!

Up In The Air

Plot: George Clooney racks up the air miles in this sophisticated comedy from Jason Reitman, the Oscar-nominated director of Juno.

I can see why this film was up for a few awards. The comedy is at the perfect level, which these days seems a difficult acheivment! George Cloony is very very good. The relationship he strikes up with a fellow flyer is so believable, it felt as though they were a happy couple in real life. Anna Kendrick, who also stars in the Twilight films, is brilliant. She really shows off her acting skills here! If you want an easy-going, cheerful film to watch then this is for you. It's not a chic-flic as such; anyone could watch it. Your emotions also get a bit of a rollacoaster ride, but it's so subtle you don't really notice until the end of the film. I would definitely recommend this to anyone!

Until next time…

Up In The Air was brilliant! I went and saw it last night and thought it was great. My boyfriend really enjoyed it too. It was funny, but at the same time was quite sad. All those people being fired was comical at times, but mostly reflected what life is like at the moment and sort of makes you realise the struggles some people are going through. I'm so glad I have my job!

Hi All!

Last night I went and saw The Book of Eli.

Plot: Denzel Washington stars as a warrior of the wasteland in this post-apocalyptic thriller.

Denzel is amazing in this film. It makes you think without realising it. I loved the twist at the end. There's not much I can tell you about it without giving anything away. It is about a man that travels with a book, always heading west. He does everything he can to protect the book. If you like mysterious thrillers, then this is a film for you. My friend didn't really understand it, and still didn't get it when I tried to explain it to her, so if you don't want to have to think too much and want a chilled, relaxed film, this isn't for you.

Until next time…

I wasn't sure about seeing The Book of Eli, but you've convinced me. I'm intrigued to see if I can understand the film! I hope so, otherwise I might come away disappointed! You've definitely got me going to the cinema more though these days. I didn't realise how many good films they were bringing out!

Hi All!

Last week I went to see Brothers.

Plot: A family is torn apart by the after-effects of war.

This film was incredible. Toby Maguire is on top form playing the role of the older brother in the marines sent off to war. Jake Gyllenhall provides us with a spectacular performance, capturing the emotions of the younger brother, just out of prison, who loves his brother more than anything but hates the fact that their father despises him for not making anything of his life. Toby is definitely the favourite in the family, but, when he does not come back from Afghanistan, his family has to try and cope without him. This film is absolutely gripping. I remember hearing a woman in the queue behind me telling her boyfriend over the phone that this film was going to be soppy so he wouldn’t like it. I have to disagree. The war side of things men will definitely like. The relationships are portrayed powerfully and it shows how irrational emotions can become with the effects of war. I think anyone who enjoys dramas, thrillers, emotional, and war films will love this. I went with my mum and there is a scene at the end where both of us has our hands over our mouths in shock and suspense. We could not take our eyes off the screen. A must see!

Until next time…

Wow, Brothers sounds really good! I saw a couple of trailers but wasn't sure about it. Thanks for recommending it though! Maybe I will go with my husband over the weekend. It's nice going to the cinema together.

I really liked the look of Brothers. Yeah, it looked as though it could have been a bit soppy in places, but it definitely still looked like a guy film! I'm glad you've confirmed that! Me and a group of my mates were thinking of bombarding the cinema of Friday night, so maybe we should see that! Oh, and don't be scared off just because we'll be there. We'll be good, I promise Wink

Then again, there is that new Mel Gibson film coming out. That looks pretty good…

Yeah, the Mel Gibson film, Edge of Darkness, does look good. I am hopefully seeing it tomorrow afternoon. Once I've seen it, I'll write a review Laugh

Hi All!

On the weekend I saw All About Steve.

Plot: Rom-com queen Sandra Bullock is stars in a frothily funny comedy of romantic obsession.

I was really looking forward to this film as the trailers looked very funny. I can confirm, this is definitely a girly romantic comedy, so I know there will be a lot of people out there that won’t like it. To be completely honest, the beginning of this film left me disappointed. I wasn’t turning out as I expected and I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy it. But then….it miraculously changed! Before I knew it, I was loving it! Sandra Bullock’s performance was brilliant and consistent. This may sound like an insult, but it’s not. She managed to keep me believing in her strange character the whole way through. To begin with you don’t really like her, thinking she is just too strange and doesn’t realise it, so then you pity her, but then you admire her! I love the way they ended the film, but I won’t give it away. If you like a feel-good rom-com, then this film is for you.

Until next time…

Hi All!

As promised, here are my thoughts on Edge of Darkness.

Plot: Police officer, Mel Gibson, is horrified when his daughter is gunned down at his house. He ruthlessly hunts down her killers in a desperate attempt to discover if he was the target, or what she could have done to warrent her murder.

This is an incredible thriller! Mel Gibson is on top form, as is Ray Winstone. The two of them work well together to create two versions of similar men, just with different motives. This is exciting, fast-paced action which will have you tensing in your seat as you desperately try to work out what's going to happen next. If you're like me, you'll instantly know what's wrong when Mel Gibson's daughter came home, but you just don't know why. The film manages to incorporate policital deceit and corporate dirty dealings, whilst at the same time giving the audience an action-packed thriller that will keep them drawn in for the entire film. I personally felt the ending was a little weak with a side of cheese, but it was still all-round a brilliant film.

Until next time…

I went and saw The Edge of Darkness over the weekend and I get what you mean by the ending! It sort of spoils the whole film. It was just so bad! I can't remember half the good stuff now. Such a shame!

Hi All!

On the weekend I went and saw Wolfman.

Plot: A village in Victorian England is menaced by the horror of a werewolf.

I went and saw this reluctantly. I can usually judge a film by its trailer quite well and this one didn't inspire me. The film turned out to be ok, but not brilliant. Anthony Hopkins I felt was pretty good (I usually think he's amazing!) but I don't think he was given a very good character. There is some action, not a great deal of suspense, but it kept me vaguely entertained for a couple of hours. It's one of those films that I'm glad I've seen but I won't be buying the DVD. The werewolves look a bit more like the gorilla-men in Planet of the Apes than werewolves, but I guess they wanted us to use our imgaination a bit more! Overall, and uninspiring, ok-ish film.

Until next time…

Wow, I thought Wolfman looked quite good! Maybe I'll just wait until the DVD comes out or until it's on Sky.
